Niger is a landlocked country, and one of the worlds least developed. 80 percent of Niger is located in the Sahara Desert, with its 19 million strong population located mostly in the far south and west of the country. The country is reliant upon subsistence farming and livestock, but the country is rich in resources, including uranium.
There is a great opportunity for satellite technology in Niger as the country’s fixed infrastructure stands at only 2 percent. Adoption of mobile devices across Niger is growing rapidly and mobile network penetration totals 40 percent.  Though centres of population have access to the mobile network, it is much more challenging to reach Nigeriens living in remote regions where there is currently no access to connectivity.
As Niger is landlocked, it does not have access to the submarine cables that are now serving parts of the African continent. However, the government is making efforts to improve infrastructure, and the use of VSAT could provide instant networks for those more remote communities where is does not make financial sense to roll out terrestrial networks.
